"Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." (Matthew 5:48)
As I have shared with some of my dear friends, my spiritual batteries have been recharged from last Saturday's HAPAC Retreat! During the introduction, Fr. Joepel, our retreat facilitator, asked us to reflect on our retreat expectations. I came up with:
* To bookend the "celebration of service" of my first year as a HAPAC member;
* To begin a brand new HAPAC year, with a mission to "pass on the light of Christ" (our retreat theme); and
* To reflect on my journey as a mother
Before the retreat, I've always considered myself as God's work in progress; that the best that I could ever achieve in this life is to be a better version of myself today; and that true perfection will only be achieved when I join my Father in Heaven. Maybe all these things still make sense. However, I truly felt that God was speaking to me through Fr. Joepel as he said:
Jesus calls us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. Perfection is possible. Do you believe that?
In my mind, I simply couldn't grasp the concept. Nobody is perfect.
Indeed, perfection is possible. To love truly... To forgive when it's difficult to do so... To give up your time (volunteer) without asking for anything in return... then you have reached perfection.
And so it just clicked for me! Yes, nobody's perfect - including me. But if we do things that are beyond our human nature, things that require us to rely on the grace of God, who is perfect, then we become perfect with Him.
I get it now.
I truly was even more hopeful after that revelation!
Little by little everyday
Little by little every way
Jesus is changing me
He's changing me
My blessed Savior
I'm not the same person that I used to be
Though it's been slow growing
But there's a knowing
That someday, perfect I will be!
(More retreat reflections to come)
Dear Lord, Thank you for revealing Your truth. May I never forget that I am only perfect with You, in You, and through You. Bless the Holy Angels Parent Advisory Council (HAPAC) and all our school parents, who devote countless hours in loving celebration of service to You. Whisper to each of them, "My child, you are perfect in my eyes." Amen.
